BMFA Achievement Scheme ‘Super’ Workshop

Popham Airfield - 2 September 2017
A very successful Achievement Scheme Examiner/Instructor ‘Super’ Workshop was held at Popham Airfield, Hampshire on 2 September 2017. ‘Super’ because it was the first Achievement Scheme Workshop to be jointly organised by two BMFA Areas, South Midland and Southern Areas.
There is a lot of effort necessary to plan and organise such events and both Area Coordinators and many of the two Areas Chief Examiners felt that the fantastic facilities at Popham needed to be put to maximum use. The joint event offered Examiners and Instructors the opportunity to share experiences across Area borders.

As Popham airfield has a permanent Multi Rotor FPV racing track ,which was in use on the day, it offered a great opportunity to see and understand Multi Rotor FPV racing, which is bringing many new people into our sport. This understanding of Multi Rotors was further enhanced with a demonstration by Chris Bradbury (well known Multi Rotor aficionado, after he appeared in the first AS training video) of the various Multi Rotor stability settings that Examiners need to understand in order to conduct Multi Rotor tests.

Given the very changeable and often windy weather this Summer has thrown at us, on the day the weather was fantastic. This meant that there were quite a few members of the local Spitfire Club in attendance and both of the BMFA Area teams are very grateful to the club members for their support of the event. With so many Examiners present one attendee Brain Seymore from the High Wickham and District MAC made best use of the resources available and managed to successfully undertake a fixed wing B test.

At the end of the day virtually everyone felt it had been very worthwhile and provided some useful feedback that will be incorporated into Achievement Scheme Guidance documents ready for next year. The Area teams had felt that the location was ideal for such an event, with a really good large function room, plus of course the on-site professional catering organisation, who provided teas and coffees on tap all day, plus a really good lunch for the Workshop participants.

Everyone has had their fill and even some left over!!!

The icing on the cake for many of the attendees was that Popham is a very active general aviation airfield with lots of opportunity to get up close and personal to many of the interesting light aircraft that are based there, or visiting. What more could keen Aeromodellers have wished for on such a day!
